Great light, about the same power as a 10W halogen. Mine broke after several falls and (I think) moisture getting in through a crack. Madison refused to do anything about repairing it (even though I accepted it Continue reading...

Hi all, My LBS have put one of these by for me. Today, had a look at it and tested it in a dark lit room, the brightmess and beam is amazing considering it's an LED, easily bright enough for unlit roads. The performance of the light has had fantastic reviews worldwide but was wondering whether anyone had any problems with the handlebar mount? Thanks.

Isn't that light about £80?

I was looking at one. The battery on my Cateye's doesn't last that long now. In fact it failed last night leaving me to get home with just the dynamo light.

I was worried about the their low power output. Is 4W max really bright enough?

The light uses the latest Luxeon LED technology which means that although the output is only 4W, the actual light you get would easily pass as an 8W halogen light. Its seriously bright, has a charge time of 1.5 hours not the 7 hours stated on top right hand corner link. It has 4 internal NiMH batteries, and I reckon on unlit roads, all you'd need is to have the light on medium setting, burn time is 4 hours for medium, 2 hours for high and 8 hours for low (which is still incredibly bright).

If you take away the unpredictable light output of the Cateye and the really chunky water bottle battery and all the leads, its streets ahead in terms of performance, and weight.

They cost £125.

The internal rechargeable batteries are replaceable, also if they run out of power you can use conventional alkaline batteries in it to get you home.

The LED will last for an average of 40 hours per week, every week for 5 years.

Sold.

I've just order a EverLed Luxeon Star White Bulb Replacement from www.ultraleds.co.uk.

In theory I should just be able to put this in my Dynamo lights and get a simular light output.

I will let you know how I get on.

I dunno whether you agree but those cateye batteries take an age to fully charge, just for about 1.5 hours of fairly bright light.

I'll be training lots in the dark over the autumn, winter and spring for the mountain charity ride next June and plan on doing 30 hours a week. Riding in the dark for what, 20 weeks until the evenings start getting light for longer so by my calculations, the LED will last for 16 years :-p

Yeah, would be good to hear how you got on with it.

Posted: 19/09/2005 20:41

Yes, I totally agree. Espeshially as I only get about an 45 mins now my battery is past its best.

I've charge mine at work before now. I didn't today and it ran out, Typical!. (It is the first time in months that its been used though)

Thats a great example of Sods Law!

Was looking at the ultraleds website and for £27, it's gotta be well worth the upgrade.

I also recall that red low battery warning indicator on the Cateye being on all the time and I think I got 32 minutes out of the battery shortly before it went in the bin.

According to the tech info for the light and motion, it has a Luxeon Star White Bulb like the one you ordered but not sure what impact your dynamo lens will have on the end product, but if the lens is the same as the light in motion one then you'll be sorted for those country lanes for sure.

Posted: 20/09/2005 19:58

I ordered the Luxeon lens and lens holder at the same time. I think this was an extra £2/ £3.

I also ordered a 7.2V model car battery and charger off ebay for a massive £5. Just incase the dynamo hasn't got the juice to power it.

Sounds good, would be intesresting to know whether it worked with the dynamo. Do you do electrical upgrades for a living then?

The first thing I'll do when I get the Vega is change the supplied 2000 mAh batteries (aa x 4) and replace them with 2800 mAh ones, which should increase burn time by an hour for each setting. I'm not sure whether this would knacker the LED prematurely or affect the Smart charger in any way. The light has a large on/off switch at the back of the light and around that switch is an illuminous light which flashes, when fully charged, the light stops flashing. Would the charger still recognise the extra charge time needed for the higher capacity batteries?

No I don't do electrial engineering for a living. However, I do have a PHD in Engineering (mechanical) which sort of helps.

Swithing/charging the batteries over shouldn't be a problem provided both sets are the same type ie Ni-MH. Your light has a DC to DC IC to allow the 4 aa batteries (4.8V?) to power a 3.7V lamp (and provide the various power settings) so I can't actually work out how much longer you will get; but I can guarantee it wont be an hour for every setting.

I think for the lower settings it should be over the hour!

Received the Everled bulb today and fitted in the Dynamo lights. It's was brighter than the standard bulb but nothing special. I wouldn't waste your time with one.

I don't have much idea about how a dynamo works as I've never used one. I've seen them with like a bottle type barrel being driven by the tyre sidewall and I think the faster you cycled the brighter the light.

The Vega has four light settings, high = 2 hours burn time, medium = 4, low = 8 and 2W flash mode = 24 hours. I like the idea of a 1.5 hour charge time, as quite often when I had the Cateye, it would take 10 hours to give me a pathetic 1 hour burn time.

When I was in the LBS, I compared the output and light quality of the Vega with a Cateye 300 and I reckon two of them would almost match the brightness of the former.

Since last posting on this thread, I've found out from Light and Motion that the batteries are hardwired in to the LED cluster so maybe 10 years down the line the light unit would have to be sent back to California. Given the postage and wait times, I'll probably order a replacement battery and LED unit for it from them. It seems the Turbo smart charger costs about 66% of the total price so the batt/LED unit won't cost that much..

Hi Guys
I too was seduced into purchasing the Light & Motion Vega last year, and was more than happy with the performance.
I put the light away for the summer months following a full charge and last week came to use it and the battery was flat(only to be expected after so long in storage)Put it on charge and the green light would not stop flashing. After an overnight charge? I discharged the light in flashing mode and this only gave about six hours before it died.Re-charge it and discharged it but capacity only increased slightly.
Has anyone else experienced battery problems?
and can it be resolved by charge/discharge cycling?
Any help appreciated
Regards Mike

Eeek, no had any problems with mine, but I have not really dug them out afte rthe summer...just short trips.

However, when I used them on a night ride of an hour off-road in the summer (actualyl quite effective lighting) they were fine so I think mine is fine..sorry to be no use.

Been using mine for a while now, top stuff.

Odd Brown Mutt/Adam
Good news- Following several charge/discharge cycles our little friend remains illuminated @ full beam for 90 minutes so well in spec.
Thanks for you comments.

Michael. Your battery problem may have been caused by the battery charger not fully charging all the cells.

A "smart" type NiCd or NiMH battery charger stops charging when it detects a dip in voltage (about 5mV to 10mV per cell). So when the voltage of some of the batteries dips the "smart" charger thinks that all the batteries are charged when sometimes one or two of the batteries may still need more charging. This can happen for example when the batteries are in different states of discharge when the charging begins.

I prefer a 10 to 12 hour trickle charger because all the batteries will be fully charged so your lights get maximum run time!

Hi Glen
Unfortunately this isn't an option with the Vega as you have to use the supplied charger to avoid invalidating the waranty.
Fortunately I think I have the problem sorted I have been going through charge/discharge cycles and now have the beam on full power for 133 minutes then the green led starts to flash light wattage goes down to the next setting and still goes on for a further 30 minutes before it dies.To be honest when I was using it last year I never gave it too many charge cycles and it probably never brought the battery up to full capacity.
Many thanks for your input, most appreciated.
Regards Mike

Is the L&M Vega still the light to get? Or has anything better come on the market?

I have been using a CatEye 530 for my commute which ends with some unlit lanes. That light barely coped but then committed hari kiri and jumped off my bike this morning only to be run over by a Porsche!

So I am torn between getting another CatEye or getting something "better". I have seen the Vega at £110 (at Merlin Cycles?) Is that about right?

Posted: 04/12/2006 13:50

I use an Electron Nano 1w which cost £25. The amount of pedestrians who have moaned it's too bright is staggering. I was thinking about the Vega until I bought this!

Posted: 04/12/2006 14:40

James, go for the Vega, it is just awesome.

Posted: 04/12/2006 14:52

Adam - I've just ordered one (for £105 + £2 P&P!)

Posted: 04/12/2006 14:56

If anyone was thinking about getting one of these lights I have to recommend Merlin Cycles Ltd (www.merlincycles.co.uk). I ordered one yesterday afternoon and it arrived at lunchtime today neatly packaged and just as requested.... All for £106.45.

James
