Buffalo Systems DP System Cycle Shirt
More about Buffalo Systems
Average Rating: 4 out of 5
No. of Reviews: 6
RRP: £93
Year: 2000

Description: Designed to be worn next to the skin, Buffalo's DP system combines a fleece pile liner with a Pertex shell. The fleece wicks sweat to the Pertex shell which disperses it over the surface and allows it to evaporate. The same happens if the jacket gets wet, allowing it to remain warm even in the rain.

'Bombproof all-in-one jacket for extreme conditions'
Strengths:
Very warm even when wet and dries fast, just as the manufacturers claim. Has good features (neck and underarm zipped vents, rear pockets, handwarmer pockets). Solid construction.
Weaknesses:
Too warm for anything but the depths of winter, even with the vents. The underarm zips can be hard to adjust while riding.
Overall:
I got this jacket 2 years ago and it's seen heavy use for XC trail riding through each winter since then. It's stood up to the abuse very well, keeping me comfortable in rain, snow and hail and surviving more than a few crashes! As noted above, it's not a spring or summer jacket though. Recommended for those who want to ride in the worst conditions, but its winter-specificity drops its performance rating to "good" rather than "great" as you'll need another jacket for milder days!

'THE winter mtb cycle shirt'
Strengths:
Quality, made in UK from excellent materials. Unusual design may render some people sceptical - don't be ,it really works! This is a cold weather jacket that will keep you warm in the hills during a downpour and dry out quickly with body heat. Temperature management is via large vents and neck opening, and velcro cuffs. Under crotch strap keeps your bollocks and arse warm & dry and goes unnoticed during rides. You have to 'get to know ' how to use a Buffalo effectively, but once converted you'll look forward to our usual shitty 9 month long winters!
Weaknesses:
mmm - not good for summer use,ha ha .Seriously - I thought initially it had quite a specific useage but I couldn't go back to my usual Helly Hansen and lined Goretex. I guess versatility isn't one of the Buffalo's strengths.
Overall:
Does the job its designed for. I wouldn't be without one.

'THE BEST WINTER JACKET'
Strengths:
bombproof, fantastic for the worst conditions
Weaknesses:
winter use only
Overall:
Got mine in 1994. Worn five days a week, every week for winter months since original purchase. An absolute classic. Does exactly what Buffalo say it will do. Dead hard!!

'FANTASTIC - THE ULTIMATE 3 SEASON JACKET'
Strengths:
Keeps you warm, and generally dry. When it is really wet you do not notice as you do not get cold. The construction is also windproof, excellent for those bright cold days. It is a departure from the accepted layer system but this does work. Not for summer use...sure... but today 30th April it is p*ssing down with gale force winds. I came back warm and dry.
Weaknesses:
The tails to be used with the trousers need to be folded out of the way, too hot for the summer !!!!!
Overall:
This my second Buffalo Cycle shirt the first being purchased in 1990. They last, wash without any problems and do the job perfectly. Be brave do not go with convention and try one.

'SUPERB TOOL FOR A SPECIFIC JOB'
Strengths:
When used properly, with the crotch straps fastened and venting matched to conditions, it is supremely comfortable. Although it is not waterproof in the traditional sense, you do not loose heat from being wet.
Weaknesses:
You need the strength of personality to ignore the laughter of the less enlightened.
MUST only be used between mid Autumn and early Spring in the U.K.
Overall:
Mine is an early example from the late 80s, with a velcro crotch strap that I've intended to convert to Fastex for the past 5 years. As it was a semi-prototype (I used to sell them) it lacks the back pocket, with the kangeroo and bib pockets of the normal Mountain shirt instead. This does not matter to me, as I prefer my convertable Sidi bumbag/rucksack anyway.
My winter wear is Buffalo shirt, lycra cycle shorts and Ron Hill Tracksters, with Porelle Dry Socks if wet. Its far and away the thinking persons cross-country wear as it works across a huge range of winter conditions. I,ve even used it over a wet suit for windsurfing, and been amazed by the fact that the pile fabric liner had dried out by the time I took the shirt off.
Highly Recommended.
