The focus of the 2010 Tour de France route will be the celebration of 100 years since the Pyrenees were first included, but in particular the Col du Tourmalet. The Pyreneen climb, which has featured in the Tour more than any other climb will undoubtedly be the centre of attention for the riders and fans alike.

Like last year, the route will first take the riders through the Alps and then into the Pyrenees for what, on paper at least, should set the race up for a thrilling climax, with the Col du Tourmalet (at 2,115m is the highest road in the central Pyrenees) featuring not once, but twice!

The Tourmalet was first picked by the Tour de France organisers in 1910. In that year the first rider over the top, and who went on to claim the yellow jersey, was Frenchman Octave Lapize. Stage 15 will retrace the stage used in 1947, starting in Bagnères-de-Luchon, including an ascent of the Col de Aubisque, and finishing in Pau for the first rest day.

The next day opens with the Col de Marie Blanque before heading back towards the Tourmalet for a mountain top finish. The Etape du Tour will follow this stage on the 18 July.

Racing will start in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the fifth time the country has hosted the start of the race, on Saturday 3 July 2010. The Prologue will be an 8km individual time-trial. Stage 1 will begin in Rotterdam and cross the border halfway through the stage, passing through Flanders in Belgium. Stage two and three will stay in Belgium, paying homage to the spring classics, with several sections of cobbles (13km in total) to be included.

More detailed route information soon...

No TTT...... Lance sad, Cadel glad

Yes, interesting there's no TTT. Lance isn't too pleased about it, saying via his Twitter account "No TTT which is a bummer for @teamradioshack. I suspect the strength of our team will be a benefit in the 1st week tho."

Are Radio Shack guaranteed a ride then?
Posted: 14/10/2009 13:44

I suppose that unless they can guarantee all French domestic sponsors they will be wise to write that invite.... I'm sure LA could make a good business case for them paying him to go

The town I live in will be paying about €200 000 of tax payers money to the organisers of this "défilé de toxicos à velo". I can feel a letter of protest to the mayor coming on.

Yes John, but how much money will those taxpayers rake in with all of the fans and associated visitors spending their cash? I initially thought you'd be excited to have them finish in your town, but given how much you despise them for drugs maybe I should have thought otherwise. Personally I am quite excited the departure is from Rotterdam - about 10kms from my hometown of Delft - so I will be there as I was in London 2007!

The Rotters will Dam the manx man from getting the green jersey as Thor get's another carpet ride in the mountains.

If all the towns in France refused to pay the organisers they'd have less prize money to hand out to the riders and it's cash that fuels the dope race. The Tour is a major headache for the French authorities. On the one hand it is an excellent source of tourism revenue but on the other hand a Tour in which dope is rife is an embarrassment. The gendarmes and justice system being independant of action will continue to do their jobs and there will no doubt be another scandal. No such thing as bad publicity though and those aerial views of France all over the television screens of the world can't do any harm. Qu'elle est belle la France!
