Sustrans launches cycle insurance scheme

Sustrans, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity, has teamed up with specialist cycle insurers Butterworth Insurance Services to offer cyclists a comprehensive package that protects their wheels and also gives something back to the charity at the same time. To demonstrate their commitment to sustainable transport, Butterworth Insurance Services have pledged to donate 10% of all premiums received in 2008 to Sustrans.

The new 'Ecoinsure' scheme has been developed by the market-leading brokers, who have specialised in cycle insurance for over 25 years. Donations received from premiums will be put specifically towards maintaining the many bridges on the National Cycle Network across the UK.

An Ecoinsure policy covers all types of cycle - bi, tri or uni - including tandems, recumbents, electrically-assisted pedal cycles and covers different types of journeys, from commuting to charity bike rides. With its 'all risks' cover, the policy offers peace of mind if your bike is stolen, involved in a crash or suffers malicious damage - unlike some home contents insurance.

Julian Hunt, Sustrans Information and Trading Manager, said: "Encouraging and enabling people to travel by bike is vital in terms of tackling climate change and rising levels of obesity. However, with more than 1,200 bikes stolen every day,* people may not feel comfortable leaving their bikes locked up when they pedal to the shops, work or school. We're delighted to be working in partnership with Butterworth Insurance Services to offer cyclists peace of mind that their wheels are covered against theft, and that they are helping Sustrans make our environment safer and more attractive for cyclists."

For a free indicative annual premium/quotation or more information visit www.ecoinsure.co.uk - there is an additional 5% discount if you apply online - or telephone 0870 141 2324.

Further information about Sustrans, including other news releases and detailed online route mapping, is available through our website: www.sustrans.org.uk.

Still doesn't cover you for when someone nicks your wheels/saddle-seatpost/lights/cycle computer/ pedals etc...

I've never had my "bike" (read frame) stolen, only the bits attached to the frame.
