Non-stretch windproof fabric may not be that great an idea over the knees, but Bioracer's Anato Storm jacket proves it's a winner when it comes to keeping the upper body snug.

Like all versions of the windproof concept it starts with the appropriate fabric, in this case called, er, Windtex. Incorporating a polyurethane membrane, it is only moderately stretchy but feels very tough. The inner surface is a soft, thin fleece that provides enough insulation to allow the Storm to be worn with a short sleeved undervest in all but the most severe conditions.

With elasticated cuffs, a high collar with fold-over zipper conceal and a lower edge complete with Bioracer logoed gripper strip, there is no obvious means of ventilating perspiration beyond the inherent breathability of the Windtex fabric itself and the full-length zipper. On the evidence, these between them do the job.

There is plenty of the neat detailing expected on top-end garments today, from the zippered iPod/mobile pocket on the chest with lead loop inside the neck to a fair sprinkling of reflective strips. Fit and quality of manufacture are excellent, and the whole thing feels good for several seasons' hard wear. The single rear pocket has a narrow zip closure under a protective flap that keeps the rain out. I'd prefer to lose the zip, which is a little too narrow for easy access to the entire width of the pocket. Others may like the security it offers. Everyone will like the all-conditions (including rain) weather protection. Clearly, the Belgians know something about bad weather.
