Southdowns Challenge

The Sportive is a continental style cycling event starting and finishing in the village of Southwick, Hampshire on road routes (over 2 distances 50 and 80 miles) that criss-crosses the Southdowns Way. The Sportive is organised by the Rotary Club of Waterlooville assisted by Fareham Wheelers Cycling Club and will be held on Sunday 23rd September starting at 9.00 am.

Monies raised by the event will be divided equally between named Local and International Charities. The Local Cycle Shop, Velocity Bikes, will be assisting this event as 'Event Support' helping riders with any problems at the start and throughout the day.

ROUTE - The “Sportive” is clearly signed throughout and at no time should you need to refer to notes or maps. The routes are all on road and are a mix of quiet lanes and some active roads. As you cross the Downs your ride will be rewarded with wonderful views and, in places, challenging terrain. At all times the routes chosen have been with cycling safety in mind. The 2007 routes see minor changes and the introduction of purpose made signage.

AWARDS - All riders completing the ride will be awarded a certificate of merit. In addition, time standards will be set on an age basis. Gold – Silver – Bronze awards will endorse the certificate. These awards and their attainment form the main element of your challenge.

SUPPORT - This event will be fully supported on the day with marshals at critical points – technical support vehicle on call – emergency vehicle on call. The 50 mile ride will have 1 check point and feed station – the 80 mile ride, 2 check points and feed stations.

EVENT HEADQUARTERS - These will be in the ‘D’ Day Memorial Hall in Southwick Village, Hampshire. This picturesque village with over a 600 year history is best known as being the headquarters of the ‘D’ Day landings, sited in Southwick House.

ENTRANTS – Included in your entry fee will be a hot drink before the start and on finishing a hot snack and drink will be available. Secure storage will be available at the hall for your kit. Those arriving by car will find plenty of car parking spaces.

CHARITIES – The event this year is supporting both the local charity Basics and the Wheelchair Foundation. The Wheelchair Foundation is an international charity providing wheelchairs throughout the third world. The Southdowns Challenge in 2006 awarded £1250 to last years two named charities. Basics is a team of over 20 local volunteer doctors who act as first responders to road accidents and in some cases marine accidents.

TIME TABLE - First riders go off at 9.00a.m. The event H.Q. will be open from 8.00a.m

I did this ride last year as my first ever sportive.

The route is well signposted and the roads are good.

A few nice hill's and rolling roads and not much traffic to contend with.

Came home with a GOLD as well.

Definatley going again this year.
