Carnac is a French based manufacturer that began life in 1949, and has focused primarily on cycling shoes for the last 30 years. They know a thing or two about producing top quality shoes and it's for this reason that plenty of professionals choose to wear Carnac.
At the top of the ladder is the M7, and packs a lot of features. From the Ergo Sole designed to increase comfort with a vibration-proof pad under the metatarsus to reduce shocks, and with arch support and a reinforced heel design. The upper is made from a lightweight and breathable micro-fibre material, with additional aerated micro mesh around the shoe, and two Velcro straps and a SMC2 buckle keep everything in place.
Uniquely, two soles are available, depending on how competitive you are. For ultimate power transfer you want the 100% carbon sole of the MFC5 - fibre strands are oriented in such a way as to obtain a lengthwise and lateral rigidity while filtering the micro-vibrations. An aluminium coating provides a stunning silvery finish. For a better balance between performance and comfort is the MPS5's mix of polyamide and carbone. Both come with replaceable heel inserts. Expect to pay around £200 for the M7's.
Mounting your cleats to the sole is slightly different with Carnac. The Universal Interchangeable Insert (UCS) was developed in 1992 but later updated in 1999 with the Multi-Pedals System (MPS). The idea is a special mount attaches to the sole of the shoe, and your cleat then attaches to the mount. The system is compatible with all cleat designs.
