FIRST LOOK: Wheels - 2007 overview

Specialized (pictured above)

It's really silly to judge a book by the cover and all that, but I just can't help thinking that these look a bit PlayMobil... When Spesh first launched the Trispoke we probably said the same thing though. They have a deep section carbon rim and extended flanges on the hub to allow for shorter spokes and better aerodynamics. Still not sure?

Campagnolo

We've already seen new stuff from the budget end. The New Gold Shamal has a new/retro feel with gold anodising and Fulcrum inspired rims and spokes. The Hyperon clincher has been perfected and a new rear hub arrangement

Mavic

Not much new but a few upgrades to the Cosmic Carbone (mainly making the centre of the hub carbon) and bigger flanges for the Kysrium ES to provide a little more strength for the rear wheel. They've also made a MTB version of the ES too.

TUBELESS! Shimano/Hutchinson

We managed to miss this one, so no picture (doh!) but apparently they have a wheelset and tyre ready for launch soon. Can only be used with Dura Ace top end wheels and Hutchinson treads. More on this soon...

FSA

The Italian component maker has embelished the centre flange hub and now comes with carbon (what else) rims

DT

The Swiss hub specialists are fully committed to the complete wheel market now and had some very snazzy white wheels littered about the place. Deep section rims too with lighter sidewalls and less spokes. Basic stuff but lovely quality.

Xentis

As used by Jan Ullrich these now have a deeper section and bigger blades for TT riders and triathletes. A track version is also available (v. nice)

Lightweight

They really need to get a bigger stand, it was mobbed from the minute the show opened. They have Ventoux wheels readily available now and also have upgreaded the spoke material to provide a bit more stiffness
