Madone 6.9 Pro: top of the range model

trek madone 2008

Doesn't look bad at all

Last week in a Milwaukee art museum, Trek pulled the cover off the new Madone. First launched in 2003, the Madone has had a significant make-over – this isn’t just a face-lift and some new paint – they’ve started from scratch to develop an all-new bike to thrust the Madone back into the spotlight from which it strayed when Lance Armstrong retired.

On hand to whip the covers off the new Madone was Lance himself, winner of seven Tours de France and influential in the design and development of the previous Madone. The new design makes quite a visual departure from the previous, and perhaps most crucially of all reveals Trek’s adoption of a sloping top tube design.

With two years of development time, the new Madone sure packs some interesting features. The latest innovation is Net Molding, a process that shapes carbon fibre so precisely that subsequent machining isn’t necessary. This is evident in the bottom bracket and head tube where in-moulded bearing faces aren’t necessary. Instead the bearings can be placed directly onto the carbon, saving weight.

In a move similar to that already adopted by Cannondale and other companies for increased front end stiffness, the lower diameter of the steerer tube measures 1.5”. The bottom bracket is also an area of expansion. Abandoning the traditional 68mm bottom bracket width shell Trek have adopted a 90mm wide shell to allow them to use a wider (74mm) down tube - Trek claim 48% higher lateral stiffness. To achieve this wider bottom bracket shell (without increasing the Q-factor), Net Molding and Precision Fit Sockets place the bearings directly into the frame. With fewer parts needed, it's also lighter.

Gone are the different grades of OCLV carbon previously designated as 55, 120 and 120GSM. Instead, OCLV Carbon Red, Black and White are the labels now applied to the differing grades of carbon, used in the three different frames available.. Size specific seat, lug and top tubes mean larger diameter top tubes on larger frames.

In another adoption of a growing trend there's an integrated seat tube, but here it’s a half height design similar to that found on Scapin frames. Unlike other integrated seatpost designs however, a full range of adjustment is possible with the seat 'mast'. Three different setback seat masts (5, 10 and 20mm) are available so you can get the right fit.

Trek claim frame weights in the region of 250g lighter than the old design.

11 models will be available, and in three flavours. For the racers there’s the Pro Fit, sharing the geometry of the original Madone. Performance Fit has a 30mm taller head tube. Two WSD Fits are available for the girls.

Does anyone else feel that the new madone 6.9 pro in black and gold looks like a slightly cheaper Ridley Noah?

Looks like the spy cam photos from the start of the eyar were right and all of those who believed what Trek told them were wrong (see the other thread here)

From the sounds of the BB construction I may have trouble moving my Campag groupset off my current trek onto a new one.

(actually by the sounds of my wallet's construction I may have trouble affording a new one)

I work in a shop that sells Trek, but I don't care, to me, they were dull and boring, until now, I actually like them!
Posted: 04/06/2007 20:06

hmm. why aren't you on MSN?
Posted: 04/06/2007 20:06

Well being a Lance Fan...

I have to say..

I Like it.

I also own 2 trek bikes as well.

I'm a Lance fan. My dad has a Trek 1000. I have a Trek 1400.

and i still think the new one looks tacky.
Posted: 04/06/2007 20:15

m@
I like.
Posted: 04/06/2007 20:32

Orbea Orca?
Posted: 04/06/2007 20:43

very similar. the orca seat clamp kinda resembles the semi-integrated trek seatpost.
Posted: 04/06/2007 21:13

Lets face it it's only interesting because it's a Trek. If any of the other brands has brought it out we would be saying oh how 2004 of them!

Posted: 04/06/2007 21:15

Ricco rides Campag.
Posted: 04/06/2007 21:49

hmm to some extent i agree. Because its trek it under the spotlight alot more, so anything (within reason) it brings out we will be sayingit wonderful.

but, it cant be argued in this case that its not a nice bike. not sure on the black and gold though.
Posted: 04/06/2007 22:13

I love the irony to be honest. Lance was quoted once saying "I wouldn't ride one of those girls slopping bikes", probably a dig at Giant at the time. Lance would do anything to play with the Kasiers head. But I love it, the man who wouldn't ride one now unveils the future - a sloping bike!

He probably doesn't care tht much as he has his shares in Trek and sales have had a bit of a dip since he stopped racing.

Be interesting to see what the long headtube bike looks like. I am sure this has been designed to take on the Specialized Roubaix.

Like it!!!!! Shame the wallet is full of cobwebs
Posted: 05/06/2007 10:18

maybe not the black and gold one but the white paint scheme on top of the plinth thingy looks rather good. id buy one. although by the time i could afford it no-one will know who lance armstrong is.
Posted: 05/06/2007 10:24

it looks better than any trk i have seen before. I wonder if the lower models will be compact to?

I dont like lance, and i reckon he doped.
Posted: 05/06/2007 10:47

i think he comes across as being very arrogant and full of himself. however i dont think he doped, i hope it was just french paranoia. the last thing our sport needs is for lance to be proved positive.
Posted: 05/06/2007 11:16

he kicked the crap out of a lot of riders who were doped! I know that's not evidence really but it helpos add to my suspicion which is create dby his arrogant demeanour
Posted: 05/06/2007 11:22

suspicion which is create dby his arrogant demeanour

James you should go and work for Cycle Sport (late 90's era) where Johnny foreigner and suspicious looking blokes with bloodshot eyes were guilty of doping, while nice guys who said kind things about their mums, spoke in an accent we recognised and wrote columns for said magazine, were obviously clean.

Maybe he did, maybe he didnt. Anecdotal eveidence (particualrly that related to character) is just not enough to prove things one way or another.

Nice bike though.

Interesting thread change there.

I like it as far as the changes trek have made are bringing them into line with teh rest of the industry.

Dothey still handle as slowly as before though...that is the real question!
Posted: 05/06/2007 12:15

trek's alwas ride like trucks....

Mat i admit its not evidence and im thus not saying "he doped" but that i think he doped.
Posted: 05/06/2007 12:35

they do not ride like trucks.
I love mine.
Posted: 05/06/2007 14:05

Tab
And mine! i approve of the latest model shame it will be well out of my price range.
Posted: 05/06/2007 14:31

m@
Actually, I've never liked the ride of Treks either, though I would be very tempted by the new ones...
Posted: 05/06/2007 14:51

Each to their own I say.

Everyone is entitled to their own views and opinions.

But I like it and that's all that matter to me.

Also I dont think Lance ever doped. If you look at his history as a 16 yr old he was beating adults at Triathlon, he had a large frame (Like Me) by swimming and had a lot of musle bulk up top.

After the cancer he lost that bulk but retained the power he had before.

Hence his power to weight ratio was far greater than before.

Also he has a larger heart than most of us.

Thats all.

VLAD :}
Posted: 05/06/2007 16:36

you're forgetting the very low lactic acid production and iron mental constitution.
Posted: 05/06/2007 17:59

Also he has a larger heart than most of us.he hasn't actually released any recent physiological data he only lets us see his early lab tests, hmmmm i wonder why?

He was undoubtedlya precocious talent but they all were you dont take drugs and tun into mercx you have to be good and they make you alittle bit better. Anyway i wouldn't buy a trek i dont like lance ( First thing that made me dislike him was when he personally chased down the rider who suggested he took drugs)but if you ride an treka nd love lance i'll still ride with you.

Also trek gave bush a free bike and Bush is a proper d**k

Posted: 05/06/2007 18:47

I take it they hoped he would fall off and brteak his neck.

Bush I'm on about.

VLAD :}
Posted: 06/06/2007 07:45

He fell of and broke someone else's wrist once!
Posted: 06/06/2007 08:52

Correction; he rode into a security guard who was standing still. ;-p
Posted: 06/06/2007 09:13

i'd have run away
Posted: 06/06/2007 09:32

At risk of sounding desperately cheesey, it was sitting down with my 6-yr old daughter and watching Lance win his 7th Tour that finally got me off my backside and back into cycling.
Coincidentally my LBS is a Trek dealer, and after a brief flirtation with a 1400 I upgraded to a Madone 5.2, which I love. The new range looks very exciting, if I could ever justify getting another carbon bike I'd probably go for the new 5.5, it looks stunning and I'm sure will be even better than the one I have now.
I really hope he didn't dope, but sadly, like most of you lot out there, nothing would surprise me anymore. But, just as the Pantani and Virenque fans have selective memories of their heroes, nothing for me will beat Lance's ride to Luz Ardiden in the 2003 tour, worth every penny to buy the 12-hr DVD just for that.
I'll shut up now.
Posted: 06/06/2007 21:43

2many, you have to have a hero. And I think, even if he did dope, you chose a good guy.
Who cares, at the end of the day? You were inspired enough to ride your bike and that's all that matters.
Posted: 06/06/2007 22:38

As ever, the voice of reason Grimpeur! Many thanks.
Posted: 06/06/2007 22:44

You're most welcome.

(I am a Lance fan too)
Posted: 06/06/2007 22:50

I also admire and like Lance, I've managed a quick hello with him when he got yellow jersey after the Team TT in 2005. Out of total luck the next day he stopped right next to me to put on his Yellow Jersey which he refused to wear in respect for the leader that crashed the day before which put Lance in Yellow, this was pure amazinf. That year I followed the tour around the Loire Valley before heading down to do the Etape in the Prynees (spelling)....I also was inspired by Lance after watching the same stage up Luz-Ardiden. Vive Le Lance forever...fk Trek there just another bike!!
Posted: 06/06/2007 23:26

I can beat that. I had Lance stop round for tea and biscuits after an epic training ride.
Posted: 07/06/2007 07:59

That was an epic trg ride,

From france to coventry.

Some ride.

I wonder if Trek have insured against Lance being caught. This threads demonstrates the amazing level of identity between their brand and his. If he turned out to be a bad lad, it would cost 'em shed loads.

My favourite theory was that his cancer had turned him into a superman - not because of the drugs so much, but more that by the process of nearly destroying a body and then rebuilding it immediately and utterly to be an endurance athlete. Nature's 6 million dollar man, if you will.

Oscar Goldman is his Team Director.
