Team Astana Trek Madone

The first sighting of Astana's new Trek Madone bikes

For a while it almost looked like - after Discovery pulled out of cycling last year - that Trek may no longer be a familiar sight in the big races. After the last eight Tour de France races have been won aboard a Trek, the US bike company's lack of presence would be considered a shame.

That's not going to be the case though, as a deal struck at the last minute with the Astana team - itself going through a major shakeup following last year's doping revelations - will see Trek bikes on the start of this year's big races.

With two years of development time, the new production Madone sure packs some interesting features. The latest innovation is Net Molding, a process that shapes carbon fibre so precisely that subsequent machining isn't necessary. This is evident in the bottom bracket and head tube where in-moulded bearing faces aren't necessary. Instead the bearings can be placed directly onto the carbon, saving weight.

In a move similar to that already adopted by Cannondale and other companies for increased front end stiffness, the lower diameter of the steerer tube measures 1.5”. The bottom bracket is also an area of expansion. Abandoning the traditional 68mm bottom bracket width shell Trek have adopted a 90mm wide shell to allow them to use a wider (74mm) down tube - Trek claim 48% higher lateral stiffness. To achieve this wider bottom bracket shell (without increasing the Q-factor), Net Molding and Precision Fit Sockets place the bearings directly into the frame. With fewer parts needed, it's also lighter.

Astana will be using stock Madone 6.9 Pro frames made from Trek's top-end 'Red' grade High Modulus OCLV Carbon, and fitted with a Bontrager XXX Lite full carbon fork with E2 steerer. The team will be shifting and braking with SRAM's RED groupset, Bontrager components for all the important contact points, and Bontrager Aeolus OCLV and XXX-Lite OCLV wheelsets.

We're sure many of you will be keen to get your hands on an official Astana replica, but Trek haven't confirmed whether one will be available. You can however purchase a virtually identical bike in the form of the Shimano Dura-Ace equipped 6.9 Pro for £5,000.

The team has been making its public debut in the Tour Down Under.

Team Astana have launched a new website at www.astana-cyclingteam.com. More about Trek at www.trekbikes.com.

"We're sure many of you will be keen to get your hands on an official Astana replica,"

Come on name and shame them then, surely nobody has such poor taste

Isn't the guy at the front in one of the photos riding a BMC????
Posted: 30/01/2008 23:23

I have to agree with kps who on earth would be seen dead on such a pile of junk?
Posted: 31/01/2008 08:27

i'm sure come the summer a cruise around richmond park will reveal a few

we'll be getting a stock madone in for test in the couple of months so we can find out how it rides

The Trek Madone is an excellent bike to ride.

Just because it's now being ridden by Astana dont make it any worse than when it was being ridden by the Discovery Team.

Posted: 31/01/2008 10:25

i didn't like it then either
Posted: 31/01/2008 10:34

Name and shame me then - I'd have one, but I'll make do with my "Disco" 5.2 Madone for now though. Anyway, what's the problem? Is there something wrong with Trek bikes that Armstrong and Contador failed to notice, or are they now tainted by association with the dopers of the old Astana regime? You can bet Bally won't be getting rid of his lovely BMC and why should he? And I haven't noticed a whole heap of Giants or Colnagos in the skips at the local dump either.

to right 2my.

Is there actually any bike manufacturer who has not had a rider found to be doped on any of their  bikes yet.????

The Bike Manufacturer has no control over who uses the machine and what they do after or before getting on the bike to ride.   It is after all a tool.

I have a pretty middle-standard Trek 1400, which I absolutely love.

If their top-end are as good as their middle range, I reckon they're well worth it. (just not in Astana colours, which makes me think Eastern European pimp.)

Whilst one would always tend to defer to your wider legal knowledge Tom, the pimps that supplied the Russian girls to the temporary knocking shop over the Video store round the corner from my house, were very much of the fat shaven-headed bouncer in greasy suit type. Not a hint of day-glo electric blue about them I'm afraid. However, you young chaps may have more up-to-date knowledge of these matter than me! I re-kindled my biking on a Trek 1400 a few years back as well.

Looks like a nice bike to me, but then what do I know!!!!
Posted: 02/02/2008 13:23

2MY - Do you have an address or contact tel no for them please......
Posted: 02/02/2008 15:36

Best to ask your colleagues in Blue in the N Yorks station, they were the ones who felt the young ladies collars! (And who knows what else....!). And I'm not sure they came quietly either...fnarrr fnarrr

After the last eight Tour de France races have been won aboard a Trek- really what about 2006?

i also hate treks, they look soo slow! And to my knowledge nobody has doped on a  ridley

Posted: 10/02/2008 08:25

2006 was a testerone-fuelled BMC wasn't it? And then whatever Oscar rides. Our LBS is a Trek dealer and apparently all the 2008 stock has already been taken up worldwide - what's in the shops now is all there is for this year. Can't all be wrong can they?
Posted: 10/02/2008 10:31

they have very good marketing i'll give them that, they also seem to not let shops who stock trek stock any other bikes

Oscar rides a pinarello by the way, who worte that article and forgot about the whole 2006 fiasco? Unless Oscar doped too.....

Posted: 10/02/2008 15:22

James Stout you can't get quicker than the club run chipper wrote (see)

Definitely. The rep must be distraught when he comes in every couple of weeks to a shop that also sells Specialized and Giant. Wonder why he hasn't said anything yet?

Posted: 10/02/2008 16:53

well one in my town and one in oxford started doing trek and now only do trek they also stock ALL the same stuff (they even have a generic catalogue its kind of rectangular)
Posted: 10/02/2008 17:15

Then that's their business plan. If you buy more off one company, you'll get better margins. Seems a bit extreme to just stock Trek/Bontrager stuff though.
Posted: 10/02/2008 17:29

My LBS is a Trek dealer, but also has Look and Wilier machines, and will sell many more of those makes this year as the Trek's are virtually all sold already. I don't care what they sell, I'd buy from them everytime as they are the best kind of people to deal with, always willing to help.
Posted: 10/02/2008 18:08

their service has gone downhill as well i think he might be taking a more high volume/low qual approach. I shop at my most local bike shop always have always will he has a great range, good quality and i get stuff at cost more or less

2 riders FIRED by Predictor last year for Dope Offences and almost ALL Pro teams have their problems.

The bikes brands have little to do with the teams other than supply bikes.
