SRAM Rival and Force Compact chainsets arrive

Compact chainsets may not please the racing purists, but for those who want a lower bottom gear without the weight, extra-wide tread and visual affront of a triple, they are The Way Forward. They are also a key component of any modern groupset such as SRAM’s Force and Rival groups, both of which lacked a compact when first launched. No longer, for both are now in stock at SRAM importer Fisher Outdoor. In line with standard practice, Bolt Circle Diameter is 110mm, and there is a choice of 50/36 and 50/34 chainring pairings for both groups. Crank lengths are also the industry standard choice of 170mm, 172.5mm and 175mm.

The Rival chainset, shown, has forged aluminium alloy crankarms with an integral hollow oversized steel axle press-fitted to the right-hand crank. The left hand crank is located through a splined socket and retained aluminium crankbolt with 8mm Allen socket. Both chainrings are ‘coined’, which gives then a work-hardened surface, and then hard-anodised for even greater durability. The usual ramps and pins ensure rapid, reliable shifting. The specification for the Force crankset is similar except for the use of carbon fibre crank arms.

Both versions are supplied complete with SRAM’s bottom bracket bearing assembly, which employs oversized external bearings which are not compatible with Shimano fitments.

  • Prices are £129.99 for Rival and £349.99 for Force.

"SRAM's Force and Rival groups, both of which lacked a compact when first launched." Did they? I've had a 170mm 50/34 Rival crankset on my bike since January when I bought the groupset from gbcycles having checked extensively what was available in the range. A shortage of available parts in the UK perhaps rather lack in the range.

That said SRAM originally said the rear mech would only take a 27 cog max but they've now got a 12-28 casette listed on the "make the leap" site as well as some others that weren't there at the beginning of the year. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a 12-28 or 12-27 SRAM casette in time for the Etape as I'm fretting that the 12-26 isn't quite going to be enough.

Hmm.. I thought the same, they had compacts the first batch we had in at work...

I got my 50/34 Rival from Chain Reaction on Jan 3rd. I am running it with Shimano Ultegra 10sp 12/27 for general riding and it has been superb. It will change up or down under quite heavy loads with no trouble at all and has not over shot yet.
Riding the Mur at Geraadsbergen on a 19 cog sitting down was just great. I am very glad they decided to re-invent 'compact chainsets'. We called them 'Touring' 40 years ago.
That front mech looks a bit high though.

Tiff, that was what I was thinking, so they do run fine with Shimano casettes then? I might have to go that route as a 105 block would be considerably cheaper. That said the 12-26 block was fine in Flanders for me.

Looking at the Sheldon Brown gear calculator as far as I could tell the difference is less than 0.5kmh between 26 and 27 at a decent cadence of 80rpm and even less at a lower cadence. So not worth it?

One tooth when you get to cogs that size is not worth bothering with. If you think 26 is too small then you really need to go to the 28.
I am running full Ultegra except the chainset. The front mech is a 9sp one but it all works perfectly. Slicker than anything I have used before.

The compact was already there on release.

Cheers Tiff, I think I'm just having one of my unnecessary worries as it gets nearer.

When I tried to get a compact with the Rival chainset I ordered for test, SRAM said they were not available. To those who were able to get one when the group first came out, lucky you. They are now readily available.

I'm pretty certain we've had one in the shop for months, I'll check a bit later.
