Selle Italia Turbo

One of the most famous saddles ever made, the Selle Italia Turbo was popularised by five-times Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault. It was introduced in 1980 to wide acclaim and influenced the design of racing saddles for a decade, finally being supplanted at Selle Italia by the Flite and Turbomatic.

For 2010 it is back in the Selle Italia range in a choice of traditional black or shiny white, both applied to a synthetic leather upper. Beneath this lies variable padding over a Nylon 6  shell with steel rails completing the specification.

Identical in shape, materials and finish to the standard original, the new Turbo is a stylish option for the contemporary performance road cyclist. It is priced at £39.99 and is available through Selle Italia dealers throughout the UK.

I had two back in the day, they were a revelation in comfort compared with what had gone before. One lives-on on a bike I sold to a mate 7 years ago after 10 years of sterling service for my backside and still does 10,000 miles a year with no sign of wearing out. I still ride the latest incarnations of the saddle today, each of which has managed the seemingly impossible task of being more comfortable that its predecessor. I would wonder why anyone would take the retrograde step back the original today though.

I've still got my original black one which came as standard on my 653 Peugeot in 1990. It's now doing service on my singlespeed.

Whilst it's very nice, the modern gel saddles are much more comfortable. I recently bought a Madison G16 for my winter bike and found it to be fantastic. A bargain too at £14.

My first Turbo replaced the Unicor Nitor which had saved me from the horrors made by Brooks. I replaced the Turbo when it wore through with Turbomatics and Flites which I still use.

I may buy one for my tourer as the Turbomatic is starting to sag.

I had a Unico Nitor which, considering it was basically just a hard plastic shell, was surprisingly comfortable. The Brooks Professional was a comfortable saddle though for it's day especially after some 'breaking-in'.

My Brooks Pro got steadily more uncomfortable as it broke in.

Got my first one in white with birthday money back in around 83, still ride a turbomatic and have recently got a turbomatic recovered in Merida green leather by a car upholster. Loved the Turbo and will no doubt purchase one again. Bought a Brooks Pro a couple a weeks ago reckoning I´m now old enough to ride one and any pain in the under area ain´t going to damage my child production.

I stil have aTurbo Bernard Hinault bought circa 1986, and it has survived to several crashes and even though a bit damaged at the corners it works fairly well, I have it on my Titanium Crisp frame and do not think will ever move it from that bike until it dies (I may pass before than it I am afraid).
