New 5700-series Shimano groupset announced

Concealed cables as 105 follows Ultegra and Dura-Ace

Details of the new-for-2011 Shimano 105 groupset, coded 5700, have been made public prior to an advised availability date of May 2010 for the double and compact chainset versions and June 2010 for the triple.

As expected, the latest version of 105 is effectively an economy version of the current Dura-Ace and Ultegra 10-speed groups, closely following their aesthetic treatment while saving on cost by eschewing the use of titanium and carbon-fibre composites. Two finishes - Lodestar Black and Sterling Silver - will be on offer. 

As ever, the crankset is built around Shimano's Hollowtech II technology and features hollow cranks, an axle integral  with the right-hand crank and outboard bottom bracket bearings. The appearance of the cranks and chainrings is close to that of its siblings but 105 does not have the Hollowglide tubular outer chainring. Tooth options will be 53/39 and 52/39 for the double, 50/34 for the compact and 50/39/30 for the triple.

The dual control levers have bee redesigned to route both brake and gear cables underneath the handlebar tape. Shaped along the lines of Ultegra 6700, they have reach-adjustable levers shaped to work with smaller hands and a variety of bar bends.

Two versions of the rear derailleur mechanism will be on offer, the long cage example required to work with the triple chainset while the short cage mech will work with the compact chainset and accommodate a rear sprocket with up to 28 teeth. The two front derailleurs - double and triple - have a wider inner link for increased rigidity and should offer improved shifting thanks to a reshaped chain guide profile.

A new block compound formulated to offer improved braking performance, especially in wet conditions, is the major upgrade feature of the new 105 brake calipers, which are reshaped in line with the rest of the group. The brake shoes feature adjustable toe-in mountings.

A "directional" chain with specially-shaped links and a 105 version of the latest Hyperglide cassette, the latter available in 11-28, 11-25, 12-25 and 12-27 tooth counts, complete the transmission. Hubs and pedals in matching colour finishes complete the groupset.

Whose to say it wasn't deliberate?  The photographer may be a fan of Campagnolo gear and couldn't help himself.

Indeed, fugly levers. Pity my frames no longer have bosses for downtube shifters.

I wont buy Shimano road groupsets again just becuase on so many occasions the over priced STI levers just prove to fragile. Everything else is great, I love the XT on my MTB.

I tried the current 105 STI's with a 'robust internal mechanism' ... the front shifter broke within 2 months. My local bike shop said, many had been sent back due to faults. The replacement warranty set came direct from Shimano with an attached note saying basically these levers will break unless you shift carefully.

My Ultegra 9sp levers broke, the internet at the time was littered with similar stories. The only ones which i've been happy with were the lowly SORA levers wihch survived for 4 years on a winter bike.  

Veloce Egros...half the price, get trim on the front mech, neater, and dont brake. Now with the choice of SRAM and CAMPAG, it will take a lot for me to return to the big S.

not my experience - I have two pairs of Ultegra 9 speed that are over 8 years old and in perfect working order.

I also have a pair of dura ace 7700 9 speed that were on the sunday best until I was sent into a ditch in october by an arse of a driver - the mechs filled with muddy water and still trying to remove the grit (or find someone who can) - as soon as they are repaired they will be back in use.

Strange that the triple is 50/39/30 and not the current 53/39/30.

You can rebuild SRAM and Campagnolo STIs but not Shimano. That's a major drawback. Maybe use Campy 10 speed STIs with a Shimano 8 speed cassette. (Some Campy 10 speed STIs pull the right amount of cable to work with Shimano 8 speed cassettes.)

Also, no 13-28 cassette from big S when Campag do 13-29.

Sounds like Shimano have announced this new 105 group early to head off the threat from SRAM's forthcoming Apex groupset.

Shimano 8-speed spacing = 4.8mm

Campagnolo 10-speed spacing = 4.12mm

Campa spacing always falls half way between Shimano spacing so no Shimano cassettes can be used on a Campy transmission without misallignment/lousy changes at one end of the cassette or both.

Don't forget SRAM offer cassettes with a wider range than Shimano.

I've don't consider not being able to rebuild Shimano STIs a problem, I've never needed to.

I have two pairs, both about 12 years old and both in perfect working order, one of them with probably 20,000 miles on it.
