Spotted at the Madison IceBike Winter show last week was an intriguing addition to the previously two-model Day One range from Genesis.

Labelled the Day One Alfine, it features a Shimano Alfine geared hub, albeit apparently the eight-speed version rather than the new 11-speeder, along with drop handlebars, STI rear shifting and mechanical disc brakes.

Thanks to fat 700c tyres, the overall effect is of a kind of hub geared, cyclo-cross styled all-rounder, an effect enhanced by the provision of mounting bosses for mudguards and a rear rack. In order to accommodate adjustment for chain slack without the need for an eccentric bottom bracket shell, horizontal rear dropouts are used along with a neat adjustable rear disc mount.

Price for this steel-framed beast is slated as £999, making it CycleScheme affordable and an attractive, durable prospect for the daily commute. It is expected to be on sale by autumn 2010.
