Burls bike frames

Steel and titanium custom built bicycles

Burls

There’s an increasing desire for custom, made to measure frames, and while Burls is no new brand (they’ve been around for ten years), we’ll freely admit we’ve not heard of them before.

Burls is the outlet for one man, Justin Burls, who has years of experience and expertise designing and building frames, with a keen interest in satisfied customers. While steel has been the material of choice, the company offers titanium options, with the frames made in Russia.

Frames can be custom built or available from a standard range of models and sizes. Designs vary from classic horizontal top tube, compact and semi-compact with the option of curved or straight seat stays and chain stays.

Price for a titanium frame is a very reasonable £900 and £995 for a time trial frame. An audax frame is also available.

We’ll be taking a much more in depth look at the company soon, with a closer look and test of a frame to follow soon. To find out more pop over to www.burls.co.uk

There seems to be a terrible scarcity of craftsmen in the cycling world in England, as in Spain: nobody does build custom titanium in Britain, at least to my knowledge, in Spain either; nobody builds custom aluminium; there are some people in Britain building custom steel, nobody in Spain (I did a thorugh search some time ago). There is a sharp contrast with France (quite a few frame builders, "cadreurs", building in any material) and Italy ("telaisti", building also in any material). Wonder which is the reason (s) ...

Demand or lack of it. Terry Dolan, for example, used to offer custom aluminium but has found it more profitable to go with off the peg stuff. I guess there simply aren't enough buyers to keep large numbers of custom builders in employment. After all, anyone wanting custom ti or aluminium can get it elsewhere.

Another reason for the lack of craftsmen is that no-one in this country wants to learn a trade - they'd rather do something like media studies, history etc.

I find it very interesting that in a high-tech world where everyone wants custom gadgets, I-Pods etc., that very few people are interested in making the technology work, just using it. What will happen when the lights go out I wonder?

Shock horror. People are learning trades and getting into industries which make them wealthy. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but there's not much money in fondling about with tubes in your shed.

Quite right, that's why I design and build military aircraft avionic test rigs instead.

And it makes me wealthy.

On the other hand i am planning to give up my well paid job so that instead of being financially well off i can be time rich

edit : sorry to be OT

I admit i am guily too  (of diverting the threads intent)
