Just been reading the reviews in 'gear' of the KMC gold 10 speed chain - as recommended by Vlad in the chain repair thread. One review mentions destruction of cassette by said chain - has anyone else had this problem?
It didn't destroy my cassette but it did destroy my pride! My clubmates spent all day mocking its golden colour . Mockery aside, I wasn't too happy when it wore out after less than 1000 miles. I'll be sticking with the 15 quid shimano silver ones from now on.
I have one. But then I loose cool points left right and centre. It's been fine, only done about 700 miles so far. Big plus is it has no rust at all thanks to that sticky lube KMC cover it with. I'd buy another so far. Oh and my cassette is fine.
- thanks all, very illuminating. Silver or gold? Can I take the possible mockery and -5 cool points? ....... or will the glint of gold look really good against the mostly matt black of the bike ...... tough decision time
l have had a silver one last year, and done some 4000km on it, no probs. But l hate dirty chains and regularly take off the chain and clean it in a degreasing tank. Went to get a new one this year, but LBS had none in and as such had to go for a SRAM
KMC Silver X10SL. Reliable and the link is excellent for easy chain removal and cleaning - though I just clean the surface rather than using a degreasing tank which tends to suck all the lubricating goodness from the insides of the links where it can't be replaced easily. Surface grime is the main cause of wear of the chain, sprockets and chainrings.
