More resistent tyres

Ok, I haven't been riding road for very long.  I decided to incorporate my 11 mile journey to work (22 miles a day 5 days a week) into my training for the DH season by ditching the 125 motorbike for a Giant SCR 4.0.

I have been riding to work for about 4 months now, and my tyres are wasted!

They are Kenda Kontender (700x26), my journey is pretty rural.

I have had countless punctures in this time that it is unreal, so I fitted some Slime Road Tyre Liners.  I think these have helped reduce punctures, but my tyres are full of slits and holes right the way through from sharp stones or glass, which open up when inflated so I now have to replace them after no time at all.  Other than this there is no wear on them so it is a shame.

What I am after is some proper road tested tyres that are tougher than what I have and are more resistant/resilient to slicing up or being penetrated?  Any ideas would be a great help as this is something I want to do indefinitely but not the cost of a pair of tyres every few months and numerous tubes.

Yeah probley go with the little inverted mammals as well.

Whatever tyre you go for, make sure you inflate to correct pressure and check them regularly.  If you can be bothered, I would recommend checking them every day/other day in this way:

Turn bike upside down, deflate both tyres fully.  Get one wooden cocktail stick/toothpick.  Gently squeeze both sides of tyre looking for cuts in the middle area.  Check each cut to see if there is any glass/flint/etc inside.  If there is, prise it out with the wooden cocktail stick.  Re-inflate tyres.  Whole process for 2 tyres takes about 3 minutes.  It really extends the life of the tyres and reduces punctures - most punctures are caused by bits of glass, etc that have been sitting in the tyre slowly working their way in over hours of cycling.

I recommend Conti Ultra Duraskins - seem pretty tough to me.

The most bomb-proof tyre I have tried is Michelin's Krylion Carbon, which is available in a 25c version. This tyre goes on forever and seems to shrug off sharp objects. Fast it is not, but it is quicker than the Armadillo.

As above Conti Ultra Duraskins - I used them for commuting 3 times a week (150 miles) + long rides at weekends (140 miles +) for 18 months , no punctures.

Nick advice is spot on - check your tyres regularly (I always do after the ride and then reinflate tyre before ride, guarentees I ride at the correct pressure)

Yup, it always a good idea to check pressure before every ride. What better excuse to buy a track/stirrup/workshop pump?

Ok thanks for all the advice guys, it has been very helpfull.  I think I will go for the Dura skins and definitly a new pump!

My old pump has no trouble getting my 26x2.3's to 36 psi....but 700's to 100+ and it gives up!

Thanks.
