I have 2 bikes that I would like to convert in to a winter bike and a goo/summer bike. I have a standard Trek 1400 2007 with 105 10 speed groupset. The other bike is a Giant OCR2 2005 with 9 speed ultegra groupset except for shifters which are tiagra. The giant als has Mavic Cosmic elite wheels, where the trek has standard bonty select (I think)

I am looking to take the best bits from the bikes to get a summer bike and the worst for a winter/turbo trainer hack.

Humph,

Tough one this.

Probally take the Giant frame, Ultegra group set and 105 shifters and mavic wheels as best bike.

Remainder as winter bike.   Is the 1400 carbon or ally??   If carbon might swap the frame around.

Depends on how much work you want to do ??

Trek 1400 is an aluminium frame. SLR frame i think

Tough choice again.

Pick the best frame for your summer bike and then put the best kit on it.

I'd go for 105 cranks, shifters, chain, cassette, rear mech, with 9spd ultegra brakes and front mech.  Mavic wheels on teh best bike, but its close, and as for the frame, which ever you felt most comf on for the bulk of your miles (my limited knowledge see the two as being of very smilar level).

So the trek has the better frame??

Given the similarity of the parts concerned, I would ask myself whether it's worth the hassle of changing things around.

Both frames are aluminium and I think of a similar standard?

105 10 speed is a decent groupset - I run it and Ultegra 10 and don't notice alot of difference.

As for the wheels - I would probably weigh them and use the lighter set as 'best'.

My thinking would revolve around which bike to use for winter based on whether either has clearance for guards/eyelets.  I don't enjoy riding in winter without them.  So I'd be thinking along the following lines:

Assuming you can fit guards to only one, I'd do that and use it for winter.  And the other for summer.  The only change in components I'd make would be to put the lighter wheels on the summer bike (with a change of cassette if required of course).

If you can fit guards to both, then I'd use the Giant for winter and the Trek for summer (105 10 speed being all round slightly better in my view than the mix of components on the Giant).  Again the lighter wheels on the summer bike.

If you can fit guards to neither, I'd get rid of the Giant and the heavier wheels and get a bike for winter than you can fit guards to.
