New brakes

Afternoon,

I recently had my bike serviced, and some nice shiny new wheels built up (which was cheaper than buying a new bike and seems to have rejuvenated it somewhat).

One comment from the mechanic was that the brakes had seen better days - and frankly, he was being polite!

I certainly want to get a new front one (I rarely use the back brake - think the last time was August!!!), but if there's a good offer on a set I might be tempted.

It's not a brilliant bike - a few smatterings of sora components, but the brakes were no name. I'm just wondering if anyone has an opinion on a good value for money front brake.

I was thinking going up to 105 (for about £20 for the front) - with commuting traffic I want something that'll stop me pretty well (and I also want one with the quick release on the brake itself - as it's a right faff trying to squeeze my 25C tire through an 18C gap!!)

Cheers

Tom

Get some 2006 Campagnolo Centaurs of ebay. £20 a pair!

Ebay may be worth a go - but campag ones have the wrong quick release to work with shimano STIs don't they?

Yes, they do have the  wrong quick release, which rely on the STI levers opening up more as opposed to a lever on the brake caliper itself.

105s are your best bet!

Cheers....

I think I'm just gonna get the front one though, as like I said, I so rarely have to use the rear it seems a bit silly putting good money into it. Sheldon Brown reckons the front does all the stopping anyway!!

Wait 'til it rains...
