I don’t know which wheel set to get for the best… Help please.

The wheel sets I have short-listed are as follows.

1. Dalkiia 60 mm Carbon £549, F725g R885g
2. Mavic Kysrium ES £540, F 645g R840g
3. Fulcrum Racing1 £599, F 695g R 855g
4. Easton Ascent £480, 1419g total.

In short I want versatile wheels that will give me benefits all round not just for one specific discipline. I do TT and will venture into racing in the coming months.

Is the lightest necessarily the best or a slightly heavier aero wheel better etc?

Loads of ifs buts and maybes so please help me decide.

If you want versatile the Ascents surely have to go. Clue in the name....

I think on your list the Mavics would be the best jack of all trades.

Personally I'd go for a set of Campagnolo Neutron Ultras, or maybe Eurus for the TT. You can get either for £400ish if you look hard enough.

Don't read too much into the branding, the Ascents are meant to be very good wheels, consider also the Bontrager Race X Lites, I like mine.

Don't forget, Eastons have the nicest hubs in the world!

Sorry I should have said, why not Easton Orion or Tempest instead of Ascents? They do have very pretty hubs!

Rob,

Aren't the easton orions the same rim as the ascent?

Thanks for the replies so far.

Tab,

I think the ascents have fewer spokes to reduce weight for climbing.

i had a look at the Easton Orions same rims more spokes for added strength, look nice enough though, but if they are only really for climbing then they are not the ones for me, seeing as im 78 kg im not exactly going to fly up any inclines.

Lance was 75kg. You can't call yourself a bloater, can you?

Why no go for the newer Eastons, if you fancy those ?

If one of the reputed problems with Eastons is getting the parts, surely this will only get worse as the old hubs and spokes get to end of product life.

Tom,

I forgot to mention i'm only 5', do you still think im not a bloater?

Nope 6'2" really with about 1/10 of Lances lung capacity.

Thanks SloBoy, Eastons now off my short list, which leaves the Dalkiia's, Fulcrum and Mavic's... any suggestions?

In case you're still considering, try Racing 1s from www.jedi-sports.de for about £400 inc shipping. I upgraded from Mavic Ksyrium SLs to Racing 1s and am pleased with them. They're quite similar to the ES in terms of performance and feel though I've seen some wind tunnel results that suggest the R1s are more aerodynamic (take with usual pinches of salt, obviously, though it's doesn't appear to be a manufacturer sponsored marketing exercise!).

Other R1/ES differences - potentially benefits depending on your point of view - include wider spokes, understated graphics and fantastic noisy Campag freehub. On the freehub, there are *three* variants available - Campag, Shimano Dura Ace/10 speed and Shimano Hyperglide. Make sure you get the right version! I didn't first time round...

I don't have experience of the others so can't really comment on relative merits.

Aerodynamic data is in graph form at the bottom of this page:
