Steel tyre levers
Safe on aluminium rims?

I was replacing some spokes the other day, and it was the first time I'd removed a tyre from this particular bike.  It was fairly heavy going getting the tyre off and on, and the plastic levers that have served me well enough so far are now somewhat more flexible than before.

So does anyone use steel tyre levers?  If a tyre is a bit stubborn is there a risk that the levers will end up damaging the rim?

Yes, steel levers can easily damage your alloy rims and don't even try them on carbon! Try the new Tacx levers as they are cheap and very strong and are available in a range of colours.

Technique is the key; get it right and plastic levers will do the job every time. JP is right about steel ones. If you need to resort to them, you are doing it wrongly.

The plastic levers have been fine up to now, on the three different tyres that my commute bike has seen recently and on the mountain bike.  It's just the weekend bike that's causing the problem, where the curved lip on the levers just isn't strong enough to hook the tyre out of the rim.

The Tacx levers look... different!  I'll see if I can find some in the flesh.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Let me know if you can't find them-I bought mine at Sigma in Kingston (just down the road) for about £2 or £3.They are hardly bankbreakers and you can match them to the colour of your bike/jersey/whatever.  Can pick them up from Sigma and drop them in the post, but try wiggle or crc first.

Will do, cheers.

I like the PBK steel core ones, plastic outer surface. Set of 3, £2.69. Clip together neatly

I've never yet had a tyre that I couldn't get on/off with my hands. There's a bit of a technique to it and you need strong hands!
