Help with packing a bike

I'm flying out to the Pyrenees with my bike next week. I've seen some bits that you can put in your forks to protect them from being crushed once the wheel has been removed. Does anyone know what these are called or where I can get some on-line?

Thanks.

Just go to your LBS and ask for one of the plastic front dropout inserts - they come fitted to new bikes and most LBS' just throw them away - you shouldn't have any problem getting one for free. Or you can use a carefully sized block of wood or an old front hub!! On the rear I use a Chain holder and protect my rear mech - I also but some hard foam around the chain ring.

I use a couple of old Q/R axles and their skewers. Just position a couple of old cones on the axles to fit the width of the dropouts, adjust the Q/R and you've got the strongest and easiest solution - although a bit heavier than other methods. After that just keep them in your bike bag or box along with other minor tools you'll need like allen keys etc so that they are always there when you need them.

I'll try those suggestions - many thanks.

If you go to your LBS for the drop out spacer (front and rear), ask if they have a box that a bike came in, too. The bike box will (should) fit inside your bike bag (may require a little trim) and add more protection for your pride and joy. The first time I travelled with my bike I noticed that the quick release skewers had cut holes in the reinforced centre sections of the wheel bags, inside the bike bag! The bike was ok, but had obviously been put under a lot of weight!

The cardboard box has given me peace of mind at least!

Paul
