The Gore ones are good, but the gripper elastic is a bit duff, and they're not super ultra warm. As a base layer they're great though.

i use a pair of pearl izuma ultra sensor shorts and either provision 3/4 (no insert) or the ground effect daddy long legs (again, no insert) over the top depending on the temperature. works for me...
