Whats the best waterproof windproof breathable jacket for about £100?

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Lowe Alpine Rush for £70 is very good. its a quality general purpose lightweight waterpfroof so doesnt have the price premium of bike specific brands.

otherwise anything made from goretex paclite is ideal, it has the best combination of waterproofness lightweight and breathability, its significantly better than standard goretex and a lot of ownbrand fabrics

I have a Ground Effect (http://www.groundeffect.nz) Storm Trooper which is excellent on the waterproof front though not especially breathable (having said that I've yet to come across a waterproof that is). It does have pit zips which help considerably with the ventilation so it doesn't really turn me into a boil in the bag JuliPet. Don't be concerned about buying from Ground Effect, they knock off the VAT from their prices and their parcels arrive faster than stuff ordered from some UK suppliers.

I've got an Altura Nevis, it was only about £50 ad is a proper waterproof with pit zips etc. and has been fantastic. It's even taken a couple of serious stacks without a tear (one which broke my collar bone and dislocated my shoulder - thats one tough jacket).

The fit is a bit small though, I got a medium and would have preferred a large. It's 3 years old now and I'm thinking of getting another. I've heard that the Ground Effect Flash Gordon is good too.

Raceface Aquamax....... looks great too.

Ive also got a Ground Effect Storm Trooper (pre pit-zip version - wish I waited for that one!). To add to Juli's answer - its got a zip away hood that fits under a lid a treat, thumb loops to stop the sleeves riding up (great if yer a gangly loon like myself), lots of reflective trim, a hooge rear pocket that the jacket folds into and even a pucture repair patch sewn into one of the seams for when you forget your puncture kit (you WILL forget it, one day).

I've got other stuff from GE (Flash Gorden, Double Happy's, Frosty Boy, Manta Ray, TT2) and found all the kit to be of the highest quality.

Also try Parrot for their Hydroline jacket.

Any tips or recommendations for a waterproof/breathable jacket that is suited for pouring rain in high temperatures (25-30 Celsius)? I live in Japan and I've got a rainy season in June and July and a typhoon season (September) to contend with.

Like most I'm tempted by the Vail Paclite and the Gill Adrenaline both of which would seem to do the job....however, you can't get a Paclite out here for love nor money and the Adrenaline is 3x/4x the British price.....and wiggle won't ship overseas. What to do? What to do?

You know sometimes I think the hassle I go through to clean the black line up my back is not worth it. Most expensive jackets have delicate washing instructions and oil stains together with the black line (from not having guards)do not wash out.

I May go back to cheap nylon.

A lot of people in my club are using the Altura Phase 400 or 300, depending on how rich they are. But I can't help - I sweat like a pig all the time on the bike.

I've got a Gore Gore-tex jacket - and I never wear it until the temp is below 10 degrees C. Otherwise I prefer my cheap nylon race cape.

I am glad to hear that someone else sweats like a pig. I thought it was just me!

My problem is that when it rains in the early summer and autumn out here that the temperature doesn't go down that much. And when I get to work/ home I am as wet on the inside as I am on the outside. At the moment I am using a set of light waterproofs from Columbia but they are designed for hiking and the like.

I've tried going without and it is a quick route to coughs, colds and days off. When it rains out here, it really rains....Forrest Gump in the jungle type rain.

Has anyone done any cycling overseas in really wet, warm conditions? How did you get on and what jacket etc did you use?

Goretex with just a helly hansen underneath works best for me

My mate Jon reccommends a jacket with eVent fabrics. Never used it myslef but he normally knows what he's talking about

I have an Altura Phase 400 and love it. I mainly use it for those days when you don't know if it is going to be cold or mild, and there is a chance of rain.

GB Cycles www.gbcycles.co.uk and Cyclesurgery www.cyclesurgery.com (or if that isn't right, try .co.uk) were both offering them for £50 down from £100, which seems like a bargain.

For colder weather I use an Altura H20 Out (or something like that - can't remember the exact name). I also go a pretty good price on it in Cyclesurgery last year. It is waterproof and windproof, but gives a little warmth too.

Try Wiggle i got a 04 Gill jacket for £33. The 05 verions is 10 quid more expensive. Only do it in yellow though!

I've just taken delivery of one of those Foska skeleton jackets.

It is certainly warm and waterproof but as yet I haven't had chance to test the breathability.

I will say that, with the exception of the tit in the BMW, traffic seems to give me a lot more room when I'm wearing it.

A tip for anyone washing delicate cycling clothes. Get the oldest most threadbare pillowcase you can, put you cycling gear in it and throw the whole thing in the wash. No more strange pulls and holes.

If you can afford it the best is the Rapha Softshell jacket at 175 pounds. These are functionally perfect and look great too. See the review in the Gear section.
