I've been knocked off on my commute wearing a bright yellow gilet and loads of lights front and back.  If a drivers not paying attention to the road then they'll hit you whatever you're wearing.

Why do Ninjas wear black ?

The usual problem is car driver impatience. Last night on my way at least two drivers tried to squeeze into a gap that wasn't there. This was despite wearing a bright yellow top and having a load of lights. I think the vast majority of drivers know full well that you are there, but try to squeeze past because they are such a rush.

Arthur,

Ninjas were the assassins of the Samurai and they used to be dressed in black so that when they worked at night time they could hide in the dark shadows and then kill the target and escape without anyone seeing them.

Adam - Yes I haven't seen or heard from M@ latley  at all - I take it he has found a team to ride for.   Let us all know how he is doing, we would all love to know if things are OK with him.

He's found a team - He's riding for KFS Special Vehicles / Sunday Bicycles. Doing a lot of training too and should go wel, I'm sure he'll come on here soon, I just can't remember his password...

So Ninjas wear black in order not to be seen ! (message there somewhere)

Yes but they don't tend to wear flashing and constant lights though. (message there somewhere)

Put it this way Arthur - Have you ever seen a NINJA.   NO - that is the point, you cant see them as they wear black.

and they are skilled in the arts of concealment, obfuscation and glamours.

I don't think you get many Ninjas in Ayrshire.  Oh no hold on maybe you do and I just haven't seen them on their bikes because their wearing black.

I wear BLACK socks in the winter.

That way - if they get road spray - they dont get trashed like the white ones, which end up being a grey colour.   Even with persil and vanish.

When much, much younger I used to have a pair of luminous, fluorescent yellow socks - not for cycling - just a fashion statement  (!) ........ now they'd be useful on the bike -'hi viz' I suppose you'd call them today

Hmmmm. heres another theory. the next time you are driving your car at night pay attention to what colours you can see. the light given off by your headlights makes everything look a kind of yellowy white. anything dark in colour at the roadside shows up more in the yellow light.
pay special attention the next time you pass a cyclist wearing yellow. don't include his lights or reflective strips, i find i can see black bibtights before i see a yellow top.
Agreed hi vis colours are more visible in low light conditions.

I'm not saying everyone should wear black though.

just a thought

thats why most clothing manufacturers put on reflective accents, i've even got them on my shoes!

I always wear bright colours on my bike - Last year cycling along a local country road ( I am 6ft 7" 100Kg and was wearing a KoM top - unmissable so I thought) close to where I live when  I was forced off the road into a ditch by one of our local panda cars - he was too busy on his radio, driving too fast  and on the wrong side, not paying attention (there were no flashing lights but they cannot use that as an excuse), had I been a car then it would have been a nasty head on. I only suffered bruises / scratches and a damaged ego, I had an X ray but thankfully no damage to the shoulder, the bike needed 2 new wheels and rear deraileur.

I phoned the Police quoting my location / part of his number plate, model of car,  time of day etc. and they were not interested. A letter written to the Chief Constable of the Area got the same reply - operational matters, I was under the impression that the Police had to abide by the Highway Code, had the car been a private car would the police just ignore it ..... I doubt it .

On a lighter note people walk into me when I am shopping in supermarkets (my usual comment didn't you see me? - reply no which is quite scary seeing as these same people will be getting into their 1 ton weapon and driving the streets) .

Therefore I doubt it makes much difference what colour you wear - Idiots in steel cages with 4 wheels will always exist. We just have to be vigilant, If you want to wear Black wear it - The Blackest top I have is my Discovery top, but that only appears in the middle of summer.....
