£399 Charge Plug

Charge Bicycles are a company that will be familiar to anybody who dabbles in MTBs, but with the launch of the first of three planned road bikes, you’ll be hearing a lot more from them on the hardtop.

The Plug is their first 700cc wheeled bike. It’s a street bike built around a Tange plain gauge frame, and at £399 is pretty good value for money if you're looking for a commuter.

It comes with Charge's own bullhorn style "Slice" bars with Brown Tape, Charge's "Spoon" Saddle (also in Brown), Charge's own design straight bladed "Whisk" forks and Sugino Messenger Cranks. A flip flop rear hub allows for singlespeed or fixed.

Cyclo cross style brake levers and caliper brakes are fitted as are removable stainless steel top tube cable clips so that, if you decide to run the bike fixie style with front brake only, the frame looks super-clean.

The Plug is the first of Charge's forays into 700c wheeled bikes, and there are two other bikes to follow soon. The Tange Infinity steel framed "Tap" is equipped with flat bars, a Shimano Nexus Hub, mudguard and rack mounts and is more suited to commuting.

Topping the range will be the "Mixer", equipped again with internal hub gears, but this time using Shimano's new Alfine hub and also featuring Shimano hydraulic disk brakes. The Mixer frame is constructed from top-of-the-line Tange Prestige steel and boasts an eccentric bottom bracket to keep the bike looking neat.

The Charge Plug will be available in the UK from August. Check out www.chargebikes.com for more info.

Nice simple looking bike... anyone ridden one? That is the kind of aesthetic for leather saddles and bar tape... doesnt have to be decorative lugs and winter heating allowances! The price seems good and in my opinion looks more refined than the likes of the bianchi pista and fuji entry models....

Shame it isn't around for a wee while yet, anyone know who will be stocking it?

Evans are going to be stocking it.

I plan on getting one.

cool... obvious upgrade would be a nice brown leather brookes saddle! also wonder if it would look better with black parts instead of alloy...

I like the alloy, I think it fits in with the traditional look of the bar tape and saddle.

It looks like it will make an ideal commuter for London and will allow me to give my road bike a break.

we're getting one on test soon so we'll let you know how we get on with it - regarding its looks, i think it kinda looks ok-ish
Posted: 07/06/2007 17:23

ok-ish! What an endorsement!
Posted: 07/06/2007 17:39

haha okish... i like the head tube decal but as all bike companies do they have to slap a load of other ones all over the shop... flat blue paint job works well. I spose this bike sits right up against the surly steamroller. I think is cooler than a condor pista (mainly because they have become a GQstyle accessory for every chump in town)and are hideously expensive considering what they are.

classic charge bikes paint job. dont know why no-one else has ever tried it - looks fantastic in my opinion.
Posted: 07/06/2007 20:00

...maybe lose the brown tape and saddle though
Posted: 07/06/2007 20:00

Bottom bracket looks worryingly low for a fixie.
Posted: 08/06/2007 14:33

probably is low... but not really a track bike..its a city tool. made to be parked halfway up a london lamp post..

rhb

I want one

Can I justify owning 5 (and .5) bikes though?
