Continental Ultra Gator Skins

The jury is out on Conti's winter training tyre unless you treat it right, says Paul Smith

Continental Ultra Gator Skin clincher tyre £18.95

If you include their predecessor then I have personally had this model tyre fitted to at least one of my six bikes over the last seven years; most of the time I use 700 x 25 or 28c on my two Audax bikes, one used as a winter club riding and work commute bike, the other saved for longer tours and for summer club riding.

It is for this style of riding that many buy this tyre, which is designed to give a fast ride with good grip from the light tread pattern and yet still offer a useful degree of puncture resistance. This it achieves with Conti's full ‘DuraSkin’ sidewall casing and a Kevlar reinforcing breaker layer under the tread. The DuraSkin layer also makes the exposed sidewalls more tear resistant. The tyre's profile is such that it is often chosen by those who ride a bike with race bike clearances all year round, many choosing to use them during the winter months.

As I have used them for many years, you can conclude that I must have found then to perform exactly as described above, since that is indeed was that very kind of tyre I was looking for. You would be correct, as I would not continue to use them otherwise. I would also add that I have found them to be durable. So; review done, top marks all round for this tyre then? Well; no!

Disagreement

The reason being that I would estimate that there will be as many who disagree completely with my findings as there are those who have found them to perform exactly as I describe. Many users comment that they have not found them at all puncture resistant or durable; they may well give a fast ride and a good level of grip, but so do their summer tyres; if they wanted to live with the punctures they would have continued to use them! So, why have I and many like me found them to be puncture resistant while others have not?

Well, one reason could be that, being aware that many owners do have problems, I am very strict in making sure that I run them at the correct tyre pressure. Especially on commuting bikes, it is quite easy to allow the pressure to drop slightly without a daily top up. I pay extra attention to this, as I know that those who, like me, have found them to be reliable also make sure that they never let them fall more than a few PSI under the recommended pressure. Another often-heard comment is that many Ultra Gator Skin riders find them to be puncture resistant when new but far less so as the tyre wears down and long before it is worn out.

I have found this only to a limited extent, mine remaining puncture resistant right up until they are worn to the extent that I would normally be considering changing them anyway. Only when near that time have I found that I got several punctures in quick succession. So, why have I found them durable when others have not? One theory is that, since I have used them on several bikes, on each of which the mileage may be quite low per year, I can get two or three years' wear out of a tyre. In the past it was common practice to buy tyres well before they were to be used, then store them in a cool dry environment to allow the rubber to mature. It would then become harder and more resistant to punctures. My bikes are stored indoors, so in effect the tyres are also well matured long before they start to get worn down.

In conclusion, although opinion is divided, I for one will continue to use them as a fast, puncture-resistant and durable tyre, although for sure, now I have said how wonderful they are, you just know that the next time I go out on them…...

Verdict

Reasonably fast, grippy, durable and puncture resistant - if you care for it

Funny conclusion in this review - the tyre gets 7 out of 10 for performance, 8 out of 10 for value and yet 9 out of 10 overall. How's that work then? Conti tyres are like Marmite - you either love them or hate them. I'm in the latter camp as they are just too easy to cut catastrophically on London roads and Surrey lanes.

I also like the picture descriptions, thats the oddest looking seatpost I have ever seen.

Damn.... That's what happens when you cut and paste.... Sorry, my fault both times

Day one with new gatorskins and full inflated tyres.... front puncture... ouch !!!!

I've read the ad's, bought the tyres, fixed innumerable punctures and wouldn't use them again if they were 10p each. Simply not fit for purpose.

i swear by them , i have been lucky enough and run them on both my bikes and aslo on my mountain bike and have had two punctures in two years .

I keep the pressure up at 120 psi and have had no issues what so ever !

This is the thing chaps, run the wheels at the correct preassure with a track pump every 48 hours and conti's are fine.

But doesn't that apply to all tyres?

I've had Gator Skins on my bike for 2-3 years and several thousand miles. The only puncture I remember was my fault - the result of some rather wreckless riding.

I bought them because the bike shop said they were good. If there are better tyres, I'd be happy to know about them. Any suggestions?

I really tried with Gatorskins. They rode fine, did not have too many punctures but did pick up a lot of small cuts. These turned into carcase deformation and I had to bin the tyre. After 4 of them I got the message and started using Conti 4 Seasons. The rear wore out after about 2000 miles but the front is still going strong after 3 winters and about 5000 miles. I replaced the rear with a Vittoria Rubino Pro that I had lying about and that has just worn out after over 2000 miles. Based on price I have just fit another Rubino. The 4 Seasons have better wet grip but I will live with that on the rear.

Last year I did 5000 miles on a pair that had been used for the previous year by the chap I bought the bike from. I ride 4000 miles to and from work for starters, all year round

I only replaced them after the harsh winter we had as the salt on the roads really cut the front badly. I think I had 2 or 3 punctures over that period, akll in the rear, 2 this January. To be fair, the rear had a marked flat spot in the centre and the front was starting to perish and go soft, so both were well below the condition whre one would normally replace them

I've replaced them with new at the start of February, yes I have had a puncture, but that was a rather nasty piece of flint or glass by the look of the cut in the tyre.

As others say, keep them pumped up to 110-120psi and they are brilliant.

I'm doing a 200 mile sponsored ride in May in France on my own, the last thing I want is punctures so I will be taking the Conti-shod Orbea with me over the better equipped Focus.

I always found them to be pretty tough and very durable (like all Contis in my experience the sidewalls look like they are cracking, but aren't) but am unconvinced by the grip at high pressures and an over-firm ride comfort. I switched to Michelin Pro Race Grip this winter and despite being slicks they seemed to have no worse grip but much better ride quality. They have punctured once all winter and show a little wear after one season but they still will be my pick next year.

Gatorskins? NOOOO sirreee bob. Never again. Mine seemed to have come with a set of real 'gators, which bit holes in the tyres every time I wasn't looking. I have never before or after had so many punctures with other brands. I had Conti Gatorskins on both the roadbike and the MTB, as in a moment of madness I decided to go for what was advertised as the best puncture protection you could get. Thank fk the factory doesn't make condoms...

Working on the principle that anything is better than Gatorskins, here's my latest tip for winter tyres. No surprises, just buy Vittoria Randonneurs. I fitted mine to my hack bike last November and ran them through the worst winter anyone under fifty can remember. They've now done over 2500 miles in all weathers and have suffered a grand total of two slow punctures, neither of which prevented me from reaching my destination. My colleague at work was getting flats to his Marathons and in February he swapped to the Vittorias and hasn't had one since. I am so chuffed with that performance I willingly forgive them the very little extra weight they carry. And at £13 each they must be the bargain of the year.
